the socky 4 0's

It seems to me that more and more of my friends are having big number birthdays. The ones with a 4 in front. I have to admit mine was some time back but then I started Uni as a practically geriatric 24 year old and these are mostly uni friends. I started a bit of a thing of making friends, only those who appreciate it of course, socks for the 0's. I have 2 friends celebrating 40 this weekend as a combined do. With this in mind I had saved the last pair I knitted, the Hederas, for one of these friends. But my true chaotic style I only realised on Sunday night that I really needed two pairs. Two friends = two pairs. I couldn't possibly give one knitted socks and the other say, a really nice book.

Luckily the second pair were bloke socks. I got some inspiration over at Bell's place and did a rav search for 8ply socks. This could be done.

I searched the stash at 8pm Sunday night and dragged out some Lincraft cosy wool. It had to do. I wanted to do a contrasting heel, cuff and toe to funk it up a little and pulled out some, what I think is, Jo Sharp Silkroad tweed. I cast on and got through about 2cm of cuff ribbing. I was worried. I looked to me like a potentially baggy sock. I hate a baggy sock.

Luckily help was at hand - I emailed bells next day and got some specs from her sean socks as they looked so good. Bells based her's on Thuja. I took a look and they are quite lovely. And so I started again, slightly different to the pattern. I went for 48 st and 3.5 needles. I came home from work unwell on Monday, around lunch time. By bedtime one was done. finished. completely! I cast the second on the next morning around 10 and by tea time it was done. I couldn't believe it - I am not a very fast knitter but I managed to finished these socks in only two days.

I didn't end up with the contrasting heel and toe as you can see. I didn't like the way the silkroad knitted up - it was stiff and scratchy and not at all what I wanted my friend's toes to be snuggling into.

I am feeling rather pleased with myself.

Hellooo to you, to from the Canadian Sproutsnknits. I love blogging because it reminds me of when we had pen pals in the distant past, only the mail took so long, and stamps were sometimes scarce. I actually had a pen pal in East Fremantle (WA) for some years, and I wish I hadn't lost track of her. You are the first visitor from Australia who has checked in and left a message. It gets even better with those bdays. I have passed the 0, too, but mine has a 6 in front. Love to read about others' knitting adventures, etc.

They look great! Well done you - a pair of socks in two days - I can only dream about that!

I think they look great and I too only knit for people who appreciate it. I think some people assume that it doesnt take up too much time and effort to knit something so those people dont get pressies from me, but the ones who do generally love them and use them too. I am sure your friend will love the handknitted socks. I like the alternate cuff color too.

So fast! That's faster than crochet (well my crochet anyway)!

And they look lovely too. What lucky birthday friends you have!
